A former world heavyweight champion is preparing to end his retirement for a showdown with Deontay Wilder.
Known more commonly as ‘The Bronze Bomber’, Wilder makes his long awaited return to the ring against Tyrrell Herndon on June 27, after suffering consecutive defeats to Zhilei ‘Big Bang’ Zhang and former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker.
The 39-year-old from Tuscaloosa, Alabama had been expected to announce his retirement from the sport in light of his devastating knockout defeat to Zhang, but it appears that the hard-hitting American plans on making one final push towards becoming a world champion once again.
One fighter who has put themself forward as a potential opponent for ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is Shannon Briggs, who reigned as the WBO heavyweight champion between 2006 and 2007..
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Briggs announced he plans to make a comeback this year and believes a fight between the pair would be ‘great’ for Alabama.
“I’d like to fight him, I think it’d be a great fight Alabama when he comes back.
I haven’t really retired, they just won’t fight me, I’m gunna fight so if he wants to go, we go.”
‘The Cannon’ has not fought since he beat Emilio Zarate in London almost 10-years ago. The 53-year-old from Brooklyn, New York has left the door open for a sensational return to the sport since then, even targeting a showdown with former long-reigning unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko over the years.
