Deontay Wilder has become a target man for several fighters while he decides who he will face when he returns to the ring.
Wilder ruled supreme as the WBC world heavyweight champion for many years. His unique punching power meant he stopped every man he faced until he came up against Tyson Fury.
His fearsome knockout reel included highlight stoppages of the likes of Bermane Stiverne, Luis Ortiz and Artur Szpilka but when he came up against Fury he faced a puzzle he could not solve.
The first time the pair fought to a draw, then followed two stoppage wins for Fury. Since then ‘The Bronze Bomber’ has suffered two further losses against Joseph Parker on points and Zhilei Zhang by stoppage. During both fights he appeared reticent to pull the trigger on his famous right hand.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, former world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs was asked who he would like to see Wilder fight next.
“I’d like to see him taking a step back for a second and watch the competition he’s fighting right now to build his confidence back up, and also to get the positivity back, get some confidence boosters.”
Briggs, who is now 52 and has recently announced plans for a comeback, then made a call out for the fight.
“I’d like to fight him, I think it’d be a great fight Alabama when he comes back.
I haven’t really retired, they just won’t fight me. I’m gunna fight in March so if he wants to go, we go.”
Briggs fought 68 times, winning 60 and losing six but hasn’t fought since 2016 when he knocked out Emilio Zarate in the first round. During his career he beat the likes of George Foreman and Ray Mercer and also shared the ring with greats such as Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko.
