A highly-rated heavyweight newcomer who is said to be a bigger talent than Anthony Joshua has marked his return to the ring with an impressive knockout victory.

York’s Leo Atang made his third ring appearance as a professional on Saturday night as he stopped Babu Yusuf in the opening round of their clash at the Legon Sports Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

The 18-year-old entered the paid ranks back in July. drawing the curtain on his stellar amateur career where he became a heavyweight gold medalist at the World Boxing Under-19 World Championships in Colorado.

Atang has been backed to achieve great things during his professional career as he sets his sights on emulating his ‘idol’ Anthony Joshua, who has held the unified heavyweight championship on two occasions to date.

Speaking previously on the Toe2Toe Podcast, respected trainer Gary Logan spoke highly of the young heavyweight, revealing that he believes the 18-year-old is a ‘bigger talent’ than Anthony Joshua.

“Can I be honest? He’s a bigger talent than AJ, based on what I’ve seen at such a young age. I’m looking at the technique – the strength and maturity will come. There are two big emerging talents: one is Moses Itauma, obviously, and the other is Leo.”

After racking up three wins in his first three career outings, Atang will be keen on gaining even more momentum and pushing towards becoming one of the most exciting fighters in the division over the next 12 to 18 months.

It has been reported that the 18-year-old will return to the ring for the fourth time as a professional on January 31, with an official announcement expected to be made in due course.
