Anthony Yarde ticked some boxes at York Hall in east London last night, becoming the first man to stop rugged Scunthorpe man Dec Spelman and setting up a delayed showdown with Commonwealth king Lyndon Arthur in the process.

The stoppage, however, was contentious and vigorously protested by Spelman, who had been clearly outscored by Arthur just six weeks previously. The momentum was certainly with Hackney’s former world title challenger, fighting for the first time since February, and he dropped Spelman heavily late in round six. Dec rose and looked in trouble but did as referee Michael Alexander instructed. The referee, however, decided he had seen enough and with just 18 seconds between Spelman and a welcome interval, ruled him out.

Previous to this, in a match made at 180lbs, Yarde had gained the edge with explosive counters but Spelman’s dogged pressure kept him in the contest. ’AY’ now goes on to meet Arthur in a bout first scheduled for April.

The chief support saw big-punching middleweights Mark Heffron and Denzel Bentley fight to a unanimous draw over 10 thrilling rounds. A rematch of their British title eliminator is likely, but I had Londoner Bentley in a healthy lead at the finish, his sharp counters and intelligent movement early on withstanding Heffron’s hard-hitting late charge. In fairness, plenty of observers had Oldham’s Heffron ahead.

The evening’s this scheduled 10-rounder went the full course, with ex-Team GB rep Ekow Essuman widely outscoring Frenchman Cedrick Peynaud, an ex-kickboxer who always comes to fight.

Frank Warren promoted an entertaining show for BT Sport.
