Larry Holmes Says Heavyweight Legend Didn’t Deserve The Title: “He Was Getting Beat Up”

Boxing icon Larry Holmes once claimed that a legend of the heavyweight division did not deserve to be crowned world champion.

Known as ‘The Easton Assassin’, Holmes had an outstanding professional career of his own, which began back in 1973 and would see him reign as the world heavyweight champion for seven years between 1978 and 1985.

Holmes made a mammoth 20 successful defences of his crown during this period, producing legacy-defining victories over the likes of Trevor Berbick, Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali before he was eventually dethroned by Michael Spinks.

One man that never did cross paths with Holmes during his career was countryman George Foreman, who remains the oldest world heavyweight champion of all time following his 1994 win over Michael Moorer.

Speaking in a YouTube interview, Holmes slammed Foreman’s win over Moorer as he claims ‘Big George’ got lucky against the WBA and IBF heavyweight champion.

“George Foreman knocked Michael Moorer out, but a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.

“That’s what Foreman found, an acorn. All night long he was eating right hands. His face was swollen up, he was taking punches all night and he was getting beat up. He got lucky.”

Foreman was 45-years and 299-days old when he stopped Moorer in the eighth round of their showdown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to claim the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles and etch his name into the boxing history books, breaking a record that looks to remain in place for many more years.
