Evander Holyfield and Oleksandr Usyk share some of boxing’s most unique records.
Both men managed to clean out the cruiserweight division and become undisputed, though Usyk did it in the four-belt era, and a fantasy fight between the two often gets discussed.
Both men then moved up and both once again managed to become undisputed in the banner division. Holyfield picked up belts with wins over the likes of Mike Tyson, Hasim Rahman and George Foreman. He retired in 2011 after 44 wins and 10 losses.
Speaking to FightHub TV, Holyfield was asked what Usyk should do now as an unbeaten but 37-year-old champion who has accomplished everything there is to accomplish in the sport.
“Well, he the undisputed champ, right. If he feels that he’s satisfied then he can step down. But if he’s not satisfied and feels he needs to make some more money he has the decision to make. He can retire and say this is my money I’m done, or he can give somebody else that chance to beat him.”
He then revealed why he fought on when he did but had a word of warning for Usyk about going on too long.
“I didn’t retire ’cause I did what my momma said. My momma said you don’t quit on a loss. But you don’t want to go so far that all of a sudden you can beat some people but you can’t beat that younger guy no more. It will catch up with you.”
Usyk has himself revealed that he wants to fight on and is ready to have another undisputed fight with whoever wins the IBF title fight between holder Daniel Dubois and challenger Joseph Parker.
