Evander Holyfield is one of many people who have reacted to Tyson Fury’s retirement announcement.
The news came out of the blue yesterday. In a short message posted to Instagram, the former WBC world champion revealed that he is hanging up his gloves with immediate effect.
This comes less than a month after his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. The first time came back in May when ‘The Gypsy King’ was attempting to become the first undisputed champion in 25 years.
He lost that fight on points after being caught with a big shot in the 9th round, which proved the difference between the two men. The second fight went the same way with former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk setting the pace with plenty of front foot pressure. He took a unanimous decision on the cards and is now considered by many to be the best of his generation.
Some people believe Fury’s news was might be a negotiating tactic that would force larger financial offers for him to come out of retirement and fight Anthony Joshua in a contest the public has long been clamouring for.
However, Former cruiserweight and heavyweight champion Holyfield believes his decision is final and we have seen the last of Fury in the ring, leaving a heartfelt message on Instagram.
“Good luck champ. Enjoy your retirement”
If this is to be the end, Fury has had an incredible career that saw him win belts at British, Commonwealth, European and world level as well as have an epic trilogy with Deontay Wilder. However, the fact that the fight with Joshua never happened will always be one considerable talking point.
