Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson remains a fight that boxing fans are desperate to see.
Both men have had parallel careers to date, having claimed world honours in multiple divisions and now each holding versions of the world title at 135lbs.
Davis is the reigning WBA lightweight champion and returns to action next weekend when he defends against Lamont Roach, while Stevenson holds the WBC lightweight title and beat late replacement Josh Padley last time out.
Padley stepped up to take the fight after Stevenson’s original opponent Floyd Schofield was forced out of the bout earlier in the week after falling ill, resulting in him being pulled by the British Boxing Board of Control.
While Davis and Stevenson have been on separate career paths to date, the majority of fans want to see them take on one another, and boxing legend Bernard Hopkins has agreed with that sentiment.
Hopkins knows what it is like to have huge fights against his fellow countrymen, having fought the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Roy Jones Jr and Jermaine Taylor during his illustrious career.
With that in mind, Hopkins told IFL TV that he feels the Davis vs. Stevenson fight should already be taking place.
“That fight should have been happening this week. Those are the big names people really know in boxing. Tank and Shakur are both battle tested and have extensive IQ when it comes to the top amateur level. That’s a fight I would like to see next.
Hopkins was then asked how he would see a Davis vs. Stevenson fight play out and is only hoping for one thing – no controversy.
“Close, but hopefully no controversy.”
Hopkins isn’t the only big name to offer their prediction for a Davis vs. Stevenson fight, with Terence Crawford also having a defiant pick.
