Seconds Out spoke to Hughie Fury about the heavyweight landscape he is aiming to disrupt ahead of his return to action on April 4 at York Hall.
Fury – cousin of Tyson and former WBO world title challenger – ended a three year lay-off in 2024, fighting and winning three times against Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko, Patrick Korte and Christian Thun. Now signed with rising promotional outfit GBM Sports, he hopes 2025 is the year he gets back to the top table.
The 30-year-old is clear in his goal to fight the best in a heavyweight division that is set to be blown wide open as some of the dominant names edge closer to retirement. First up is his return against an as yet unannounced opponent, though Fury says it is all about activity.
“The main thing is I just want to get active. Whoever they can get. Get this out the way and then onto bigger and better, so not too sure who they’ve got for me.
“People haven’t seen a fraction of [what I can do], so I’m looking forward to this year to put it all on display. You just have to wait and find out, but this year I’m definitely making a statement and looking forward to it. I want big fights, big names, so I’m just waiting for these opportunities to come my way now. I’d like the Dubois fight, the Joseph Parker fight, Zhang, Hrgovic, these are the fights.”
Names in the heavyweight division don’t come much bigger than Anthony Joshua, who lost in his bid to become a three-weight world champion at the heavy hands of Daniel Dubois last year.
With a comeback against Tyson off the table due to the latter’s retirement, Hughie is more than happy to step in and make a Fury vs ‘AJ’ fight of some form.
“Yeah, 100% [I would fight AJ]. I’d like these fights. Hopefully we can get them on … I can’t see why not. I’ll hopefully get some good wins under my belt and we’ll see. I’d like to definitely be [his] final fight.”
Fury’s return will act as the co-main event to Shakan Pitters challenging Daniel Blenda Dos Santos for the European Light-Heavyweight title at GBM: Once Upon A Time In London.
