Upsets in boxing are not uncommon and this past weekend one underdog managed to secure an unlikely victory against the IBF Super-Lightweight title holder.

That man was Liam Paro who managed to box well over 12 rounds and secure a stunning unanimous decision win against Subriel Matias.

Paro hails from Australia and repeated a similar sort of upset that his countryman George Kambosos Jr picked up against Teofimo Lopez. He managed to resist the Puerto Rican’s power and become champion in his first world title fight.

Speaking to Boxing Scene, Matias declared that he was open to going down under for a rematch if one could be arranged.

“I didn’t overlook him at all. He just did his work very well. It was humiliating to lose at home. You almost prefer to fight away from home. Excuses are for losers so I am not going to make excuses … If [Matchroom Boxing head] Eddie Hearn tells me I need to go Australia for the rematch, what I will do is knock out Liam Paro.”

Paro did not shy away from the competition.

“I will fight anyone. I have the biggest heart. Bring on the rest.”

As a belt holder, Paro will now be in the sights of other world champions in the division such as WBC champion Devin Haney, the WBO’s Teofimo Lopez who soon defends against Steve Claggett, and WBA top dog Isaac Cruz.
