Jake Paul is one of the most talked about names in boxing following a controversial eight-round fight against former undisputed heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson. Where he goes next remains to be seen.
The 27-year-old welcomed Tyson, 58, back through the ropes for a record-breaking boxing card in Texas, streamed live on Netflix. The main event failed to reach the same heights that the financial side managed, with ‘Iron’ Mike unsurprisingly unable to find his past form.
Paul cruised to a unanimous decision victory, moving his record to 11-1 and increasing his star power dramatically. The one blemish came at the hands of Tommy Fury in February of last year. The Brit – half-brother to former heavyweight champion Tyson – won a split decision in Saudi Arabia.
Paul has made no secret of his appetite for a rematch, but today revealed that Fury had turned down a considerable purse and excellent exposure to make it happen.
“Offered [Tommy] Fury $8M to fight on Netflix. He turned it down and now fighting an MMA fighter… Now tell me who is running? Stupid daddy controlled kid, protected from the inevitable.”
There was talk that Tyson was then brought in when the offer was turned down, so it is unclear if Paul is discussing a fresh approach.
Fury fights former UFC title challenger Darren Till on a Misfits Boxing card in Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on January 18. After the initial announcement, Paul was keen to compare Till to the MMA fighters he has beaten.
