James Toney has revealed the one legendary fighter who he believes would have defeated Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather is regarded by many as being one of the greatest fighters to have ever graced the sport, remaining unbeaten throughout the course of his outstanding professional career where he defeated all 50 of his opponents.
The Michigan-native became a world champion across five separate weight classes, ranging from super-featherweight to light-middleweight, defeating the likes of Miguel Cotto, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao along the way.
He announced his retirement from the sport back in 2017, just months after he defeated MMA legend Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Speaking on the WiseNuts Podcast, three-weight world champion Toney shared an honest assessment of Mayweather’s chances of competing during his era, before going on to claim that Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr would have defeated the American great.
“Have him fight in my era. He didn’t fight the fighters that were around in the ’90s. He waited till they retired and got out the game. He didn’t fight Chavez. He wouldn’t fight Chavez. He wouldn’t beat Chavez. Hatton was s**t. Garbage. He beat ‘Canelo,’ I’ll give him that.”
Chavez, who had no less than 115 bouts throughout the course of his career, is widely considered to be one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever. He became a three-weight world champion along the way and is remembered for his memorable battles with the likes of Meldrick Taylor and Hector Camacho.
