Kazakstan’s Janibek Alimkhanuly is set to make history when he defends his IBF & WBO Middleweight World Titles against undefeated Anauel Ngamissengue (14-0, 9 KOs) on Saturday April 5 at Barys Arena, Astana.
It will mark the first time that a Khazak unified champion has defended their belts on home soil. Looking to spoil the party is France’s Ngamissengue, who has scored nine knockouts in 14 wins but is taking a huge step up in what will be his first twelve rounder.
Alimkhanuly fought just once last year, stopping Andrei Mikhailovich inside nine in Sydney and taking his record to 16 wins with 11 early finishes and still zero losses. He brands himself the most avoided fighter on the planet and said many challengers turned down the opportunity before it was accepted by Ngamissengue.
“Kazakh Style’ is finally coming home. April 5 will be a memorable night as I defend my WBO and IBF world titles against a top opponent. Many fighters turned down this opportunity, so I credit Anauel for accepting the challenge. My goal is to become the undisputed champion, and Anauel in my way. The fans in Kazakhstan and everyone watching worldwide will see something special.”
Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who will co-promote the card alongside Nomad Promotions, said his charge is the best in the world at 160 pounds.
“Janibek is a supreme talent and the very best middleweight in the world. He has tremendous support in Kazakhstan, and we are pleased that he’ll have the opportunity to defend his world titles in front of his adoring home fans. Anauel is a tough opponent, but Janibek is in a class of his own.”
A victory will see Janibek push for unifications once more, which could come in the form of the WBA’s Erislandy Lara or the winner of Carlos Adames’ WBC title defence against Hamzah Sheeraz later this month.
