Jaron Ennis is set to return to the ring very soon.
Ennis will defend his IBF welterweight title against mandatory challenger Karen Chukhadzhian at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Saturday 9 November.
The two men have met before, with ‘Boots’ winning every round in a dominant unanimous decision win back in January 2023 whilst the IBF interim belt was on the line.
Ennis was later elevated to full world champion after Terence Crawford was stripped of the belt due to being unable to fulfil his mandatory because of the contractual rematch with Errol Spence, though that bout never ended up materialising.
The first defence for Ennis took place in July, where he stopped David Avanesyan after five rounds, extending his unbeaten record to 32-0 in the process.
The upcoming fight against Chukhadzhian has been met with some criticism from fans due to the one-sided nature of their first meeting. It has led to calls for ‘Boots’ to take on a big name next, with a potential step up to super-welterweight also suggested.
One man that has been touted is Vergil Ortiz, the current WBC Interim super-welterweight champion. Ennis’ promoter Eddie Hearn has now had his say on that match-up, as he told The Stomping Ground that it had been discussed and they would love for it to happen.
“The one thing that has been discussed potentially, not really for the February card, is ‘Boots’ against Ortiz, it has been mentioned before, we would take that fight in a heartbeat.”
Ortiz is unbeaten at 22-0, with 21 of his wins coming by knockout. A fight against Ennis would be an entertaining affair, but there is another huge name that Ortiz has been linked with – Terence Crawford.
