Jaron Ennis has announced he will be campaigning at super-welterweight from now on, leaving behind his unified belts at welterweight.

The switch-hitter from Philly is one of the sport’s brightest talents, but has said he has recently been competing far from his full ability due to struggles with making the 147lb weight limit.

The scene at 154 is exciting, and ‘Boots’ won’t have trouble fitting in. One man the majority of fans want to see him fight, particularly due to previous talks being put on ice, is knockout artist Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Speaking on the match-up, Ennis told YSM Sports Media it ‘has to happen.’

“That fight can definitely happen, and it’s the fight everyone wants to see. I’m at 154. It got to happen. That fight is gonna make a lot of money. We’re going to sell out no matter where it’s at.”

Ortiz boasted a 100% knockout ratio up until last year when he went the distance with tough Ukrainian Serhii Bohachuk, who scored two knockdowns and was, many feel, hard done by when the American got the nod via majority decision.

The 27-year-old fan favourite then beat Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision earlier this year. He is currently recovering from hand surgery, but wants the fight with Ennis as much as fans do.

Both men have been accused of avoiding making it happen at one stage or another, but ‘Boots’ says this is just fuel for the fire.

“It’s extra motivation. I can’t wait to shut y’all up. We’re here now. It’s time. It’s going to happen, for sure.”

News on his super-welterweight debut is expected soon.
