Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis believes Terence Crawford has made one big mistake ahead of his mega-fight against Canelo Alvarez.
The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska is pencilled in to challenge Canelo for his unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles at an unconfirmed venue in Las Vegas later this year.
‘Bud’ is tasked with moving up two whole weight classes ahead of his showdown with the Mexican icon, who has been a dominant force at 168lbs ever since he made the move up from middleweight 7-years ago.
‘Boots’ Ennis is one fighter who has shown an interest in the huge bout, but believes that his countryman is making a costly mistake that could play a huge factor in whether he can defy the odds and dethrone Canelo of his world titles.
In an interview with FightHub, Ennis offered an honest assessment of Crawford’s chances against the 34-year-old, as he admits he is leaning more towards the man from Guadalajara, Mexico.
“I think you gotta lean more towards Canelo, cause like I said before he’s been putting big guys out and Canelo’s not even really a 168 pounder, he probably really should be at 160 maybe, and he’s been hurting these guys.”
‘Boots’ goes on to reveal how he believes Crawford should be taking a fight prior to stepping up to 168lbs in what is undoubtedly the toughest test of his career.
“I think Crawford should take a warm-up fight at like 160, or at least take a warm-up fight just to get the feeling of somebody a little bit bigger and things like that.”
Before he can turn his attention to Crawford, Canelo must first dispatch of IBF super middleweight champion William Scull who he is set to face in Riyadh on May 3, as he bids to become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs.
