Jaron Ennis has weighed in on Terence Crawford‘s monumental victory over Canelo Alvarez.
Crawford moved up two divisions from his last outing to face Canelo for the undisputed super-middleweight world championship, entering the ring with many in the sport saying he was naturally too small to win the fight.
Undeterred, the switch-hitter from Omaha, Nebraska kept his undefeated record intact, boxing superbly on his way to a unanimous decision win. The outcome – only Canelo’s third loss in 68 fights – cemented Crawford as an all-time talent and saw him become the first male fighter to capture all four major belts in three divisions.
Ennis, who had called for a fight with ‘Bud’ when he was back down at welterweight, told YSM Sports Media that it was ‘a great win’ for his countryman.
“That was a great win for Crawford, a good fight for boxing. I seen some highlights, it was a good win. He accomplished a historic goal and it was a good win for him.”
Asked if he was surprised about the outcome, having previously predicted a Canelo win and even sparred with the Mexican icon in preparation for the fight, Ennis said no.
“It’s boxing, anything can happen.”
Ennis makes his debut in the division on October 11 against Uisma Lima, with a win setting him up for a fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr or to challenge for a belt. Though he may move up to 160lbs in the future, it’s unlikely Crawford will wait around for that to happen.
