David Benavidez will not rest until he has his fight with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
Thought by many to be the best contest the sport can offer, Benavidez has relentlessly fought his way back to the top of the super-middleweight division with Canelo in his sights, but the four-belt champion has been largely uninterested.
With the WBC set to finally act on making the fight happen should Benavidez activate his mandatory position rather than opt for a move up to light-heavyweight, and Canelo admitting he would take the fight for an extremely large purse, fans could finally see it come together.
In an interview with Cigar Talk, IBF Welterweight Champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis was asked about the match-up and backed Benavidez to get the win.
“I like that. I like it. That’s a good fight. I think I’m gonna lean towards Benavidez. He just too much of a bully. Canelo kinda small.”
Should the prediction be correct, Benavidez would become only the third man after Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol to beat Canelo in a 65 fight campaign, and the only one in the 168 ranks where he has dominated.
Undefeated ‘Boots’ – who is relentlessly chasing down a fight with two-time undisputed champion Terence Crawford – then said that the only way he sees the fight happening is if Canelo is convinced by mega money courtesy of Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh.
“I don’t think they’re gonna fight though. Unless Turki [Alalshikh]’s involved.”
Alalshikh has expressed interest in making it happen, as well as the Canelo-Crawford bout and, finally, Crawford-Ennis. Which comes first remains to be seen, but in the meantime the Mexican undisputed champ is expected back in action this September with the frontrunners for the opposite corner being Puerto Rico’s Edgar Berlanga or the UK’s Chris Eubank Jr.
