Jaron Ennis is set to move up to super-welterweight for his next fight.
Ennis has already achieved a lot in his career, becoming unified IBF and WBA welterweight world champion after victories over the likes of Eimantas Stanionis and David Avenesyan.
‘Boots’ now plans to relinquish those belts as he bulks up, a move that has been discussed for a while now – he had already been linked to a super-welterweight fight earlier in the year, but instead opted to remain at 147lbs for one more fight in order to have the unification clash with Stanionis.
The man ‘Boots’ was in talks to face in February was Vergil Ortiz Jr, the undefeated hard-hitter who instead took on Israil Madrimov last time out, winning the fight by unanimous decision.
Ortiz’s father, Vergil Sr, has now lifted the lid on the failed negotiations with Ennis, claiming on social media that ‘Boots’ was approached again for a fight later this year but refused an offer of over six million dollars.
“You forgot to say Jaron Ennis was the original guy offered for Nov and we accepted. You then from your mouth said he turned down 6.5 million and asked for over 10 … Oh don’t forget those two tune up fights y’all said he requested.”
Ortiz himself then needed just two words to react to his father’s claims on social media.
“It’s true.”
With a fight between Ennis and Ortiz seemingly not happening next, fans will hopefully discover soon who the two men will face instead. Ortiz is now coming off the back of hand surgery, and holds the WBC Interim title for prime position.
