Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis Delivers Honest Verdict On Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez: “He’s Hungry”

Jaron Ennis would like to see Saul ‘Canelo’ Avarez take on David Benavidez and he is not the only one.

This is a match-up that has been brewing for some time now. Benavidez is a former two-time super middleweight champion, and, until recently, Canelo was the four-belt holder in that division, though now holds only three of the belts after being stripped of the IBF and will defend them against Edgar Berlanga on September 14.

Benavidez has long been chasing Canelo but out of frustration at not landing the fight he moved up to light heavyweight in his last contest and beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk to take an interim title and earn a mandatory shot at the winner of the undisputed dight between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

‘Canelo’ has previously put a huge price tag and talked ‘El Monstruo’ down but says he remains open to it if the money is right.

Speaking to FightHype, welterweight champion Ennis was asked what he thought might happen were the two to finally get it on and expressed his excitement at the prospect.

“That’s a great fight, that’s a 50-50 fight, I definitely think ‘Canelo’ still got it, but Benavidez is a young and hungry champ so I don’t know it’s like 50-50.”

Pushed for a prediction in another interview with Cigar Talk, Ennis ‘leaned towards’ the younger man.

“I think I’m gonna lean towards Benavidez. He just too much of a bully. Canelo kinda small.”

Benavidez is expected to return towards the end of the year to defend his light-heavyweight interim position after Beterbiev and Bivol battle it out on October 12.
