Jarrett Hurd vs Julian ’J-Rock’ Williams, set for this Saturday in Fairfax, Virginia - close to the Super WBA and IBF super-welterweight champion’s Maryland base, is an intriguing fight for the majority of observers. Hurd’s most recent challenger however, Jason Welborn, who gave ’Swift’ problems back in December before being taken out by a body shot in round four, believes it will be a comfortable night’s work for his conqueror.

"Williams just looks a strong fighter, pretty big for a light-middle too," Welborn told me. "But I think it’s an easy fight for Hurd on his home turf.
"He was very settled in our fight even when under pressure – a number of times I thought I had him; his movement against the ropes was good, and he was constantly looking for sly body shots that take a lot out of you. His reach is obviously really good and the timing and snap of his jab. It’s not so much that he’s strong with the power but I could tell he was the bigger guy in there, just the physical strength of him, how he walks you down.
"He’s still young at 28 and will get better, he’s got a brilliant team and he is one to watch out for, although will have to step up a weight in time."

While Welborn was despatched before halfway in December he was able to ruffle his decorated rival on a number of occasions, storming out of the blocks and still in contention when the perfectly placed blow downstairs robbed him of wind and the ability to continue.

"I’ve watched it back a couple of times now, and I get frustrated even more," Jason, from Tividale in the Midlands, lamented. "I felt good, I felt strong and I was getting to him. I was probably up on the cards but he just pushed me back a little bit with two low blows, I squared up, threw that soft right hook and he caught me in the solar plexus, which was a good shot; it zapped me, his power wasn’t bothering me before. I fell into it as well because I swung that right. Up to the referee’s count of ’5’ or ’6’ I couldn’t breathe. I looked at my corner, the ref, I gave Hurd a bit of a smile. I shot up on ’9’ and thought I’d just about made it but I just about missed it."

Welborn will start the rebuilding process against James Metcalf on the June 15 Leeds show topped by Josh Warrington vs Kid Galahad, and we will have more from Jason regarding his future, next week on Seconds Out.
