Jeff Mayweather Coached Floyd And Predicts Prime Fight vs Sugar Ray Robinson: “You Can’t Deny It”

Jeff Mayweather has predicted the outcome of a fantasy showdown between his nephew Floyd and the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson.

Mayweather and Robinson are often credited for being two of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves, although the debate on who actually ranks higher has gone on for many years.

Robinson rose to prominence during the 1940s and 50s, reigning as the world welterweight champion between 1946 and 1951 before making the move up to middleweight where he reigned as world champion on five occasions within a nine year period.

As for Mayweather, the Michigan native proved his credentials throughout the 2000s, winning world titles in five weight classes throughout his tenure whilst defeating the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao to name a few.

In a resurfaced interview with Stitch Duran, Jeff Mayweather – who was part of Floyd’s team early on in his career though never head trainer – didn’t hesitate to back his nephew in a fantasy showdown against Robinson, as he reveals he ‘isn’t caught up’ in the incredible record of ‘Sugar Ray’.

“I’ll pick Floyd. I’m gonna be honest, I’m not caught up in Ray Robinson because the numbers and like everything like everybody else, I mean to me what I seen wasn’t nothing that special, it was a guy that had fast hands, could punch a little bit but swung a bunch of wild punches.

“But don’t get me wrong of course you can’t deny his record and the things that he achieved but at the same time that style to me compared to what Floyd would do wrong and I mean that’s the thing is that when you take fighters in that time in that era, it’s not the same, the skill levels gotten better and a whole lot of things have gotten better, of course I would go with Floyd and not because he’s my nephew.”

Mayweather called time on his professional career back in 2017 with an unbeaten record of 50-0 to his name. He defeated MMA fighter Conor McGregor in his 50th and final encounter in Las Vegas, although he has had a number of exhibition bouts since his exit from the professional ranks, facing the likes of Logan Paul and Aaron Chalmers.
