Joe Calzaghe beat every man he faced, but wishes there was one more name on his professional record.
Welsh-born Calzaghe is one of the greatest British boxers of all time, having retired undefeated with a perfect 46-0 record. The southpaw champion held the WBO super-middleweight title for over 10 years and later unified the division by adding the WBA, WBC and IBF belts.
His hand speed, relentless volume punching and ring intelligence stood him apart in the ring and saw him move up to light heavyweight for his final two fights against American legends Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
He retired in 2009 and has since become a Hall of Famer, though is frequently linked with one fight that never was.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Calzaghe admitted that despite an excellent career, he wished he had been able to share the ring with former super-middleweight champion Carl Froch.
“I haven’t got a relationship with him. It’s irrelevant. I retired six years ago. It would have been a great fight, a big money fight, and I would have demolished him. If there was one fight I wish I had fought, it would have been Carl Froch.
“At the time I had bigger and better things, fighting Mikkel Kessler for the undisputed championship of the world, and then I stepped up to light-heavyweight to win a Ring Magazine in America against the then pound-for-pound best [Bernard Hopkins].”
A fantasy clash between the two is often discussed by ex-pros, and Froch himself has plenty to say on the matter, though often he is picked against whenever people make their predictions.
