Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s much-anticipated super fight with Terence Crawford is fast approaching.
At one time, this contest would have seemed nothing but a fantasy given the weight difference between the two men. Multi-weight world champion ‘Canelo’ has fought has won titles as high as light-heavyweight, while Crawford is a former undisputed light welterweight champion who moved up to repeat the feat welterweight.
Most recently, he has campaigned at light middleweight and won the WBA belt when he beat Israil Madrimov, but that fight was a full 12 months ago and now he must move up a further two divisions to 168lbs to meet the undisputed champion, ‘Canelo’, on September 13.
As part of the promotion for the fight, The Ring Magazine has polled a serious list of pro boxers past and present, and former super-middleweight champion and undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe has picked Mexican star Canelo for the win.
‘Canelo’ is now 35 years old and has had 67 bouts, winning 63 of them and 39 by KO. His only two losses have come against the now undisputed Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight back in 2022 and Floyd Mayweather way back in 2013.
Last time out in May, he got a unanimous decision against William Scull, with points wins coming more and more often as he has got older and, some say, boxed more cautiously, Despite the size advantage he will have in his next fight, Crawford with his slick skills, fast hands, and high ring IQ could present ‘Canelo’s sternest challenge in years.
