Ben Davison has received a fair bit of criticism following Anthony Joshua‘s recent defeat to Daniel Dubois – and some resurfaced comments from John Fury shows exactly what he thinks about his son’s former trainer.

Fury Sr never minces his words no matter the subject and the first time he made his feelings known about Davison was back in March 2020 when his son Tyson had fought to a difficult points win over Otto Wallin after being cut badly in the fight.

That came after what many believed should have been an epic win against Deontay Wilder in their first of three fights. Fury was coming off the back of a long period of inactivity and a huge amount of weight loss and credited Davison with the support to get him back fighting fit.

At the time of the Wallin fight, John Fury said of his son that his body looked weaker than it had before and that his boxing skill ‘went out the window, he needs to go back to the drawing board’ adding that ‘that corner, there is something very very wrong there.’

In a feature with BT Sport Boxing ahead of the second Wilder fight, ‘Big John’ discussed the time Davison spent working with his son.

“Ben’s a great kid but he was a PTI instructor 12 months ago. I know the kid, but you can’t expect a boy to do a man’s job. He done a great job but he was only a companion for Tyson. Tyson done all that himself but with a bit of companionship, ‘you can do another mile Tyson, don’t eat this, don’t eat that.’ But when it comes to technique and knowledge, I see a lot of flaws in the work.”

Fury would then hook up with SugarHill Steward, with whom he has remained ever since, winning the rematch and the trilogy bouts against Wilder by knockout. Fury has also levelled some criticism Steward’s way too.

Since Fury’s comments, Davison has worked with world champions and built a talented stable. He came in for some stick after the Dubois fight for instructions in the corner that some see as leading to the eventual knockout loss. Post-fight, the trainer said he would accept any negativity and was set to look over the footage.

Joshua will remain with Davison and could well opt to chase a rematch with Dubois, which has got many in the boxing world split as to whether or not that’s a good idea.
