Tyson Fury‘s father John has summed up the Brit’s chances of reclaiming a version of the world heavyweight championship as he edges closer to a return to the ring.
‘The Gypsy King’ announced last week that he would be coming out of retirement once again, just over one year on from his last ring appearance against former undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury suffered an unanimous decision defeat to the Ukrainian icon at the conclusion of their rematch in Saudi Arabia, falling short in his attempt at capturing the unified WBC, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles.
Despite announcing his retirement just one month after he was beaten by Usyk, ‘The Gypsy King’ has returned to the gym ahead of his 38th ring appearance, which is expected to take place in the coming months.
Speaking to Seconds Out, John Fury responded to the criticism that Tyson has received after he posted training footage of him where he appears to be out of shape, as he claims his son will ‘most definitely’ become a world heavyweight champion once again.
“The thing is what you’ve got to understand about Tyson, what he’s actually done in the past. People have got short memories. He beat Wladimir Klitschko, they were saying the same things then. He beat Deontay Wilder at his best, they were saying the same things then.
“It’s a broken record going on about Tyson’s shape … Watch this space, watch this space. Is he going to be a three-time heavyweight champion of the world? Most definitely. And guess what? If not, he’s tried.”
It has been rumoured that Fury could go straight back into the world title mix after announcing his return to the sport, with reports suggesting that he is being lined up to face newly-crowned WBO heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley next.
