John Fury has been speaking about a potential return to boxing for his son, Tyson.
The former WBC world champion has not fought since December when he lost his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, having also tasted defeat for the first time in his career back in May when the Ukrainian won their undisputed showdown.
He announced his retirement in January, but there have long been rumours he may return, and that speculation grew when he declared on social media that he would be willing to return to face Usyk for a third time.
“Beat the f***er two times and the world knows the truth. Any time, any place [sucker]. UK next time. 100,000 people.”
Speaking to Seconds Out, ‘Big’ John explained that his son needs six month to a year to get his body right before returning to the ring.
“He’s got to, what can I say, he’s got to spend time on his physique. Forget the boxing, he’s got to spend 12 months properly to get some muscle on his frame.
If he’s not prepared to work his rocks off for the next six months, just getting his body right, he’s got the boxing side covered, you cannot teach a great champion like him nothing, he’s a box of tricks.”
He then suggested that the thing lacking from his overall game is strength and power.
“But what’s letting him is his physical condition, his lack of muscle, his lack of strength, his lack of power. He’s not working the muscles you need at that level. If you’re working at undisputed world level, you’ve got to work like an absolute titan; if you’re not going to do that, stay retired, because the results are going to be the same.”
Fans will hope Fury does indeed work on all this and makes a return for at least one more showdown with Anthony Joshua, who is himself currently out recovering from elbow surgery.
