John Fury has always been hugely honest with and about his son, Tyson.

After Tyson’s undisputed world title fight with Oleksandr Usyk back in May 2024, ‘Big John’ was criticised for giving advice in between rounds that contrasted with fellow cornermen Andy Lee and SugarHill Steward and was subsequently not in the corner for the rematch later that year.

In the past, John has laid into that team as well as former coach Ben Davison for not encouraging Fury to use the natural assets and size that he was born with.

Fury is now retired, having taken back-to-back losses to Usyk, though many in the boxing world hope he makes another U-turn on that decision and comes back for at least one more fight with long-time rival and former world champion Anthony Joshua.

Speaking to Seconds Out, Big John was asked what he thought about a fight between his son and Joshua, and admitted he thinks the time for it has now passed.

“Not now. The horse has bolted. They should have fought five years ago when it would have been something, when they were two unbeaten people. At the end of the day, AJ has his own path his own course to go on, I wish him all the luck in the world; he’s a lovely young man. He’s got a lot of respect for his father and his family and his elders, and that goes a long way with me. He’ll always be high in my estimations, will AJ. And don’t write him off, on his night he can come back and beat anyone.”

Joshua is recovering from minor elbow surgery right now but is expected to return to the ring for a final run at the top later this year, potentially against the likes of Dillian Whyte or Deontay Wilder.
