Johnny Nelson has given his view on the upcoming fight between Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder.
Few saw this one coming as Del Boy’s 50th fight, which he has always said would be his last.
Chisora has been away from the ring since February last year, when he beat Otto Wallin, and fought just once in 2024 and 2023, when he secured points wins over Joe Joyce and Gerald Washington, respectively.
Wilder, meanwhile, also fought just once last year when he knocked out the low-ranked Tyrrell Herndon in what was a comeback fight following losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang in 2024.
Speaking to Boxing King Media, Nelson gave his view on the contest and suggested it is a dangerous one for Wilder at this stage of his career.
“Both these fighters, I said a while ago, should jack in, they shouldn’t be boxing anymore. But because of the decline of Wilder and where Derek is now, it’s probably safer now for the fight to happen than it was two or three years ago.
“I’d actually lean towards Derek for this one. Wilder, in the last few fights I’ve seen him in, he’s not looked dangerous; he’s actually looked fragile. He’s 40 now, Derek’s 42. So it’s a good call, it’s a curious fight, but if Wilder is taking this as a warm-up for Usyk, that’s a bad move.”
Chisora’s former trainer Don Charles also thinks this fight is a bad move for Wilder, who would end up scuppering his big fight with Usyk if he were to lose this one.
