Johnny Nelson thinks that Fabio Wardley vs Derek Chisora would be a sensible fight for both men.
Wardley was one of the most impressive fighters of 2025. He first knocked out Australian Justis Huni to rescue what was looking like a points loss, and then did the same thing against the much higher-level Joseph Parker, who was himself on a good run of form but got stopped later by Wardley, who famously has no amateur background.
Shortly after that contest, Wardley was elevated to full WBO champion and is now looking to make his first defence, without risking too much, as is often the way for a newly crowned champion in their maiden outing after winning a title.
Speaking to Daily Mail Boxing, Nelson explained why this fight between the two Brits makes sense for both men.
“No disrespect to Derek, he’s a good gimme. Derek is limited, he’s got a few on miles on the clock, it will be perfect for Derek to say this is my last hurrah, so that realistically could happen and you couldn’t blame either of them for doing that.”
He was then asked how the fight might go.
“I think he has the wisdom to beat [Wardley], but I don’t think he has the youth or the pace to beat him, but he has the wisdom, without a doubt.”
Chisora is now 41 years old and has always said he wanted to bow out after his 50th contest, and a potentially winnable world title fight with Wardley could tick all the boxes.
