After months of speculation, the mega-fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford has been made official.
Canelo will make a defence of his undisputed super-middleweight championship against ‘Bud’ at an unconfirmed venue in Las Vegas on Saturday September 13.
The monumental showdown will be co-promoted by Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh, Dana White’s TKO Promotions and Sela, and will be shown live on Netflix around the world.
Crawford is tasked with making the jump in two weight classes ahead of his battle with the Mexican superstar, having spent the majority of his career campaigning at welterweight before he made the move up to 154lbs last year to dethrone WBA champion Israil Madrimov.
Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr has spoken out about the upcoming mega-fight between two of the biggest names in the sport, sharing his verdict in an interview with Mill City Boxing.
“With Canelo, I like Terence, but I’m going to lean towards ‘Canelo’ with his size early but if he lets Terence get into the fight Terence going to be a problem and if Terence can deal with the size, Terence will beat him.”
Jones followed this up by summing up Crawford’s chances of dealing with the thunderous power of Canelo.
“That’s what I’m saying, we don’t know until we see Terence get hit, cause we haven’t seen him get hit with that power. That’s the deciding factor. If you can change Bud’s fight plan you got a chance of beating him, but if you can’t hurt him, you can’t change his fight plan, and you got problems.”
Crawford will become the first fighter in male boxing history to win the undisputed championship in three divisions should he be successful, but is faced with undoubtedly the toughest test of his glittering professional career.
