Roy Jones Jr Names The Fighter He Faced With The Best Jab: “Hardest Punch He Threw”

In the eyes of many, Roy Jones Jr remains one of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves.

The Florida-native enjoyed a great deal of success during his boxing career, beginning with an Olympic Silver Medal at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea, though it was widely accepted that he should have won the gold medal.

Jones would go on to win multiple world titles across four divisions throughout the course of his professional tenure, producing impressive wins over the likes of James Toney, Antonio Tarver and Bernard Hopkins.

Arguably the greatest win of Jones’ career came in March of 2003 when he moved up to heavyweight and dethroned WBA world champion John Ruiz at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

In a feature with The Ring Magazine, Jones was asked to reveal which of his career opponents had the best jab, giving plaudits to former two-weight world champion and countryman Virgil Hill.

“The best jab I think I faced was of Virgil Hill. His jab was the hardest punch he threw. He’d hit you on top of the head every time he threw it, and it was quick on top of that.”

Jones prevailed over Hill when they crossed paths back in April of 1998, stopping ‘Quicksilver’ in the fourth round of their non-title showdown at the Coast Coliseum in Mississippi.

Hill held world titles at light-heavyweight and cruiserweight during his career, sharing the ring with the likes of Jones, Jean-Marc Mormeck and Thomas Hearns prior to his retirement from the sport in 2015.
