Roy Jones Jr and Floyd Mayweather are two of the best boxers to ever have laced up the gloves.
Jones Jr was known for his versatile skills across a career that spanned more than three decades.
In that time, the American made history across multiple weight classes with his unparalleled speed and agility leading him to capture world titles in four divisions, from middleweight to super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight.
That is a record unmatched by anyone else in boxing and made him the first fighter in 106 years to win a heavyweight title after starting his career at middleweight. His most famous wins came over the likes of James Toney, Bernard Hopkins and John Ruiz.
Mayweather famously retired unbeaten with a record of 50 wins from 50 fights, 27 of them by KO. He held titles in divisions spanning five weight classes from super featherweight to super welterweight and beat the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, as well as the MMA star Conor McGregor.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Jones Jr was asked to pick a winner between Sugar Ray Leonard and Mayweather and sided with the multi-weight champion known as one of the ‘four kings’ alongside Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler.
“I would take Sugar Ray Leonard. That taking nothing away from Floyd, fought for currency, Ray fought for legacy.”
Leonard claimed world titles in five weight classes as well as the lineal championship in three weight classes and the undisputed welterweight championship before retiring after a defeat to Hector Camacho in 1997 with 36 wins from his 40 fights.
