Roy Jones Jr believes Floyd Mayweather would have had no chance of defeating one of the legendary ‘Four Kings’ of boxing.
‘Money’ Mayweather is regarded by many as being one of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up a pair of gloves, capturing world titles across five weight classes throughout the course of his professional career.
But before Mayweather rose to prominence, the legendary quartet of Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns, who were better known as ‘The Four Kings’, took the sport by storm during the 1980s.
Facing each other on at least one occasion each during their respective careers, ‘The Four Kings’ provided boxing fans with a number of memorable battles along the way and all staked their claims for being considered four of the greatest fighters ever.
Speaking on All The Smoke Fight, Hall of Fame inductee Jones paid homage to countryman Leonard, as he claims ‘Money’ Mayweather would have come unstuck against the legendary five-weight world champion.
“To me, people don’t give him enough credit. People always say ‘Well Floyd would beat Sugar’ no baby, Floyd is not nearly as mean as Sugar was … How? How you gonna keep him off of him? Sugar is a dog.”
Leonard enjoyed legacy defining victories over Duran, Hagler and Hearns during his tenure, proving himself to be arguably the best fighter of his generation.
The North Carolina-native reigned as the undisputed welterweight champion for a period of time, a feat he achieved back in 1981 when he defeated Hearns via 14th round stoppage.
