The legendary Roy Jones Jr has shared his thoughts on the credentials of former pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather.
‘Money’ Mayweather turned over as a professional back in 1996 after he became an Olympic bronze medallist at the Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
He would go on to capture world titles in five weight classes along the way, racking up a number of legacy defining victories over the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, facing the latter in the ‘Fight Of The Century’ back in 2015.
Whilst he proved himself to be one of the best fighters to have ever graced the sport, Hall of Famer Jones Jr has sensationally questioned the credentials of the five-weight world champion and whether he actually got the better of a single ‘great’ fighter during his tenure.
Speaking on ATS Fight, Jones admitted that he believes Mayweather didn’t fight any great fighters that were at their prime years when they faced him, as he names a number of boxers that the former pound-for-pound star fought after they had reached their peak.
“He fought a lot of great fighters but which great fighter did he fight in their prime that was on his level? … He fought some good people yeah, I ain’t saying he ain’t fight nobody good, I’m saying on his level … Like when Berto fought him, was Berto at his best?
“Okay then, was Shane Mosley at his best? Was Oscar De La Hoya at his best? … Did he fight Kostya Tszyu? … Did he fight Paul Williams? … Did he fight Vernon Forrest?”
Jones was then asked if he believes there is at least one fighters on Mayweather’s record that can be classed as ‘great’.
“No, not one, not one. Show me one in their prime on his record that you saying that we thought ‘Oh this guy gonna beat the world’, show me one.”
Jones’ comments about Mayweather will undoubtedly continue the new-found rivalry between the two men, after they began a war of words on social media which led to Jones sensationally calling out Mayweather for a fight, though he has seen clarified those comments.
