Former pound-for-pound great Roy Jones Jr has spoken out and revealed the single greatest moment of his entire professional career.
Credited with being one of the best fighters to have ever graced the sport, Jones entered the paid ranks back in 1989, just one year after his silver medal at the 1988 OIympic Games in Seoul.
The bulk of his success came during the 1990s where he captured world honours at middleweight, super-middleweight and light-heavyweight with victories over the likes of Mike McCallum, James Toney and Bernard Hopkins.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of his glittering career came in 2003 when he made the move up to heavyweight to dethrone WBA world champion John Ruiz by unanimous decision in what is considered to be Jones’ greatest ever accolade.
Speaking on Ring Champs with Ak & Barak, Jones didn’t hesitate to reveal that his win over Ruiz was undoubtedly the greatest moment of his professional career.
“Honestly the heavyweight title was the best accomplishment in my career because it was historic. See here’s what you got to realise… by winning the heavyweight title, I’m the only man on planet earth, dead or alive, to ever start his career at 154 and become heavyweight champ of the world. Nobody ever. Understand me?”
Jones’ reign at heavyweight would be short lived however, as he would drop back down to 175lbs shortly after to unify the WBC and WBA world light-heavyweight titles with another impressive victory over countryman Antonio Tarver at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
