In the eyes of many, Roy Jones Jr is undoubtedly one of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up a pair of boxing gloves.
The Florida-native made his professional debut back in 1989, shortly after he captured an Olympic silver medal at the 1988 Games in Korea, although he was later handed the Gold Medal by his final opponent after their controversial match-up.
Jones captured world titles in four weight classes during his tenure, racking up no less than 66 victories as a professional up until his final retirement from the sport in 2023 when he was defeated by Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis.
Whilst he got the better of the likes of James Toney, Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver along the way, perhaps the greatest win of Jones’ career came in 2003 when he moved up to heavyweight where he dethroned WBA world champion John Ruiz.
Speaking to The Ring Magazine, Jones spoke fondly of former rival Jorge Castro who he says was the toughest opponent he ever faced, claiming he hit the Argentinian with ‘everything’.
“Jorge Castro by far. You could hit him with the kitchen sink and he kept coming. I hit him with everything including the kitchen sink and still just kept coming.”
Jones outpointed Castro in what was his 18th professional bout at the Civic Center in Pensacola back in June of 1992. Castro would go on to hold the WBA world middleweight title between 1994 and 1995, making four defences of his crown before he was eventually dethroned by Shinji Takehara in Japan.
