Roy Jones Jr believes Canelo Alvarez made a mistake when he called for a showdown with one fighter in particular.
Canelo began his professional career as a 15-year-old back in 2015 and since then the Mexican star has gone on to become a world champion in four weight classes, as well as the undisputed super-middleweight champion on two occasions.
He is less than two weeks away from his long-awaited ‘super-fight’ with Terence Crawford, as the pound-for-pound stars gear up to do battle on Saturday September 13 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It hasn’t been all plain sailing for the Mexican icon however as he has suffered two defeats throughout the course of his career, the first of these coming against retired five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather back in 2013.
Speaking on All The Smoke Fight, Hall of Famer Jones shockingly claimed that Canelo ‘got what he asked for’ when he called out and faced Mayweather during the earlier stages of his career.
“At 21-years-old? … He got what he asked for, it’s too early.”
Mayweather defeated Canelo via majority decision to capture the Mexican’s WBC light-middleweight title, becoming a five-division world champion when they clashed at the MGM Grand Garden Arena twelve years ago.
‘Money’ Mayweather would go on to have a handful of bouts before he eventually called time on his career in 2017, just a few months after he defeated MMA fighter Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover bout, walking away from the sport with an unblemished record of 50-0 to his name.
