Jack Catterall scored sweet and long-awaited revenge over a tough Josh Taylor in Leeds.

Two years on from one of the most controversial bouts of the modern era, the two super-lightweights ran it back on ‘neutral ground’ – although much closer to Catterall’s Chorley than Taylor’s Prestonpans. No undisputed title on the line this time around, but something perhaps much more important – the chance to put a deep and venomous rivalry to bed.

A stellar jab and quick combinations banked Catterall rounds early, with Taylor finding good success in spells, particularly to the body, but being out-landed.

The Chorley man’s shots accumulated and marked up the Scotsman, but Taylor found a new lease of life in the seventh and scored some of the most eye-catching shots of the fight so far. His pressure was impressive in the second half, and that was his case for the judges at ringside.

The southpaws were – much to the nerves of boxing fans – leaving it to the scorecards. Catterall tried his best to end it early in the eleventh but couldn’t drop the tough former four-belt champ. Both men were hoisted on the shoulders of their teams to claim victory.

117-111, 117-111 and 116-113 for Jack Catterall – a unanimous decision that seemed too wide, but a worthy winner. Trilogy? There’s a good chance.

“I had it a really close fight. I was struggling to split them in some round but in the end I had it a draw at the very end.”
