Terence Crawford is set to make a two-division jump from his last outing to face Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez later this year, and Juan Manuel Marquez has weighed in on how it might go down.

Like Marquez, Canelo and Crawford have both been champions in four divisions, though Canelo has been as high as light-heavyweight and Crawford only super-welter.

It means ‘Bud’ will be packing on 14 pounds from his last win against Israil Madrimov to challenge Canelo at 168 – a weight class in which he is undefeated.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Marquez said he ‘doesn’t like the fight’ because of the gulf in size and gives Crawford little chance, highlighting that he showed ‘no power’ at 154 pounds.

“I don’t like the fight. Terence Crawford’s a good fighter, but in the sport of boxing we have divisions. Weight classes. He is a good fighter in super-lightweight, welterweight, super-welterweight, but more?

“I remember when he fought with Madrimov. He looked slow, no power. Two more divisions? I think it’s a tough fight for Terence Crawford. But he is a great fighter. He has great defence, good combination punches, but I think the weight class is no good for him.”

As Crawford works on getting himself in shape in the gym, Canelo faces William Scull in May. The Saudi Arabia fight night gives the elite Mexican the opportunity to become two-time undisputed at 168 after dropping the IBF belt last year for refusing to face Scull – who picked it up in a vacant title fight – in a mandatory defence.
