Julian J-Rock Williams delivered one of the year’s big boxing surprises last night, dropping Jarrett Hurd on the way to a points victory which brought the IBF and Super WBA super-welterweight titles.

Before a pumped-up crowd in Fairfax, Virginia - virtual home advantage for rangy Maryland-based champion Hurd - underdog Williams started strongly and decked Hurd with a left hook near the end of round two.

In an exciting war waged mostly inside, Hurd came back in rounds fifth and sixth but was cut in the next and saw the contest gradually slip from his grasp.

Williams took a unanimous verdict at 115-112 (twice) and 116-111, with a magnanimous Hurd congratulating J-Rock and crediting him as the better man on the night. The upset had been mooted by some observers although Hurd’s previous victim felt it would be an easy night for "Swift".

There is a rematch clause, and the return could take place in Williams’ home city of Philadelphia, but this was a career high for a man derided following a punishing defeat to Jermall Charlo back in 2016. J-Rock has now won five since and, having suffered a tumultuous childhood and boxing setbacks, now sits proudly as one of boxing’s few unified champions.
