Julio Cesar Chavez is keen to see his fellow Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez take on Terence Crawford.
Chavez is one of his country’s greatest ever boxers and a multiple-time world champion in three different weight classes who had a total of 115 fights.
‘Canelo’ has gone a long way to matching many of those career statistics. He has been world champion at junior middleweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight and is currently the undisputed super middleweight ruler.
Since a loss to current undisputed light heavyweight king Dmitry Bivol back in May 2022, ‘Canelo’ has rarely been pushed hard in the ring.
That will likely change when he takes on former two weight undisputed ruler and current 154lb world champion Crawford. Although the American is a naturally smaller man, he has elite level skills, athleticism, defence and is a switch hitter who will present different challenges for ‘Canelo.’
Speaking to ES News, Chavez made a prediction for the fight and backed his countryman to get the stoppage victory.
“Canelo will knock him out in six or seven rounds. Crawford is good fighter but there’s weight classes [for a reason].”
‘Canelo’ has previously had plenty of praise for Crawford’s skills, calling him “a complete fighter,” and it’s true that the undefeated ‘Bud’ has been sitting high in the pound-for-pound rankings for many years.
Whether he can carry sufficient power up two weight classes to trouble ‘Canelo’, who has famously sound defences and a solid chin which has never yet seen him go down, is another matter entirely.
The mega-fight is set to take place in Las Vegas this September.
