The legendary Julio Cesar Chavez has named the one fighter that he believes was the full package.
Chavez is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest Mexican fighter to have ever laced up a pair of gloves.
The Mexican icon fought on no less than 115 occasions during his decorated professional career and would go on to become a world champion in three weight classes along the way.
He shared the ring with a number of generational greats throughout the course of his tenure, including the likes of Pernell Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya and Hector Camacho to name just a few.
Another memorable rival of Chavez was Olympic Gold Medalist and two-weight world champion Meldrick Taylor, who faced the Mexican great on two occasions.
In a resurfaced feature with The Ring Magazine, Chavez made no mistake in naming Taylor as the best overall fighter that he fought during his outstanding professional career.
“I faced everybody. If you look at my record, all the fights I had, I had 37 world championship fights and I didn’t hand pick any opponents. But if I was to look at the best overall fighter, it would have to be Meldrick Taylor … He had every skill you need as a fighter, his speed, quickness, power, all you could ask for.”
Chavez and Taylor locked horns in their first clash back in March of 1990 and it was the Mexican great who prevailed as he stopped ‘The Kid’ in the final moments of their showdown at the Las Vegas Hilton.
They crossed paths once again four years later and it was Chavez who came out on top once again, stopping Taylor in the 8th round of their rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to retain his WBC light-welterweight title.
