Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez believes Floyd Mayweather did not deserve to walk away from the sport with an unbeaten record.
‘Money’ Mayweather called time on his glittering professional career back in 2017, shortly after he defeated MMA superstar Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover bout to extend his undefeated record to 50-0.
He captured world titles across five weight divisons throughout the course of his tenure, defeating a number of generational greats including the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao amongst many others.
Despite the American’s dominance, Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez believes ‘Money’ actually lost at least two of his fights and therefore did not deserve to be one of the few great champions in boxing history to end their career unbeaten.
Speaking to Fight Hype, Chavez sensationally claimed that he believes Mayweather should not have had his hand raised against two opponents in particular.
“I think Jose Luis Castillo beat him, I think Floyd Mayweather lost the fight. I think he also lost to Oscar De La Hoya by a point. He’s lost two fights and they’ve given them to him.”
Many boxing fans have argued that Mayweather did not do enough in his 2002 showdown with Castillo, with a number of voices at ringside scoring the bout in favour of the retired Mexican star.
Mayweather and Castillo met in a rematch just months later, although it was a more comprehensive performance from ‘Money’ this time around, as he was declared the winner via unanimous decision to keep a hold of his WBC world lightweight title.
The De La Hoya bout is less controversial, with Mayweather scoring a close split decision points win in 2007.
