The Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua 2 is coming together, and could feature the long-awaited return of Kell Brook, plus Alexander Povetkin vs Michael Hunter
Eddie Hearn has revealed some of the fights he is trying to make for the Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua 2 undercard in Saudi Arabia on December 7, and the supershow could feature the long-awaited return, after a year out, of Kell Brook. Now back in the Ingle gym and still seeking a showdown with longtime nemesis Amir Khan for 2020, Brook appears in good shape. Dominic Ingle suggested recently Brook should return, in his first fight since labouring against Michael Zerafa last December, somewhere just above the 154lb super-welterweight limit and the trainer also believes Kid Galahad, coming from Qatar, might make sense on the show, although Hearn appeared only lukewarm to that prospect.
As well as the Brook comeback, and an appearance from unbeaten heavyweight Filip Hrgovic, Hearn is pursuing some other intriguing undercard clashes. Liam Smith, the former WBO super-welter king seeking another world title shot, could move a step closer to his goal with a contest against American Jessie Vargas, a two-weight champ in his own right.
In-form, world-class heavyweights Alexander Povetkin and Michael Hunter should meet. Povetkin picked up a good victory over Hughie Fury in August, while Hunter is on a winning run of six since stepping up from cruiserweight, and only lost down there to the imperious Oleksandr Usyk. He most recently defeated previously undefeated Sergey Kuzmin earlier this month.
A projected crossroads match at super-feather would see ex-WBA super-bantam ruler Scott Quigg return from injury-enforced absence against recent IBF 130lb title challenger Jono Carroll in a bout which is almost guaranteed to deliver brutal action.
The show as a whole is shaping up to be well worth watching.
