Newly-crowned world champion Keyshawn Davis is already targeting his next opponent just days after capturing gold.
The 25-year-old from Norfolk, Virginia dethroned WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk in New York City on February 14 to win the first world title of his professional career, stopping the Ukrainian in the fourth round of their bout.
Just days after his victory over Berinchyk, ‘The Businessman’ is already eyeing up a return to the ring and has even identified a potential opponent to make the maiden defence of his WBO crown against.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Davis showed no reluctance in targeting Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz as the preferred opponent for his next outing.
“You honestly want to know? … I wanna fight Isaac Cruz. I think that would sell, I think we will both make some money off that. At the end of the day, I think it makes sense.
“Let’s be real, Mexicans and African Americans, when we fight it’s always a mega fight, it’s respect to that team over there, it’s respect over here, so I think we could make that fight happen.”
‘Pitbull’ Cruz became the WBA super lightweight champion last March with victory over Rolando Romero, but would go on to lose his title just a few months later against José Valenzuela.
The 26-year-old from Mexico City challenged Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis for the WBA title at 135lbs back in December 2021, suffering defeat to Davis via unanimous decision despite becoming only the second fighter to take ‘Tank’ the scheduled distance.
Cruz made his return to the ring on February 1 with a points victory over Angel Fierro in Las Vegas. He could now be in contention for a bout against ‘The Businessman’ which would grant him the opportunity of becoming a two-time world champion, though requires a drop back down in weight.
