Amir Khan retired several years ago but has always talked up the possibility of a return to the ring, and now a boxing legend is in his sights.
Khan was a thrilling fighter all throughout his career, even in defeat. Aged 17, the Bolton man became the youngest-ever Brit to win an Olympic boxing medal when he picked up silver in Athens in 2004.
He turned professional the following year and in 2009 he won the WBA light-welterweight world title by beating Andreas Kotelnik by 12-round decision to make him one of the youngest ever British world champions.
He had plenty of ups and downs from then on, including an epic win over Marcos Maidana in 2010, but losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.
He never shied from a challenge and later stepped up through the weights to take on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford, losing to both before his final fight in February 2022 when he was stopped inside six rounds by his old British rival Kell Brook.
Speaking to Metro, Khan revealed that a fight with Manny Pacquiao could still materialise after many years of talk.
“There are talks. There’s a lot of interest. I’ve seen numbers which I’m happy with and I’ve seen a location which I’m happy with. Manny has come back to the same team that I’m dealing with and said he would want something as well. Manny is happy.”
Pacquiao is a former eight-weight world champion who has been linked with Khan for many years, and the pair were even once training partners at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym in LA.
Pacquiao has not fought since his draw with Mario Barrios in a world title fight last summer, and word is that if the two can negotiate, this contest could take place in 2027.
