Amir Khan has given his view on Conor Benn’s chances against welterweight world champion Ryan Garcia after a recent photo of Benn cutting weight emerged.
Benn is making another big step up in what will be his first world title fight out in Las Vegas on September 12 when he challenges WBC ruler Garcia.
It will be his first fight down at the welterweight limit of 147lbs since 2022. In 2025 he twice fought Chris Eubank Jr up at 160lbs, losing the first fight on a points decision, then winning the rematch in dominant fashion.
Back in April, he took on former champion Regis Prograis at a catchweight of 150lbs and won a points decision but failed to really impose himself physically on an ageing fighter
Speaking to Boxing King Media, Khan questioned how much power Benn will carry down at welterweight.
“Great fight. I saw a picture of Conor Benn making the weight and obviously he’s coming down [from that weight again]. He’s not going to be as strong and as powerful as we see him in that fight against Eubank but I think Conor is a good fighter.
“I like the way he moves his head, he’s very tricky and hard to hit and he bangs. Let’s hope he has that bang still at that weight at 147. We know that Garcia is a good puncher and a good boxer, and he’s tall, he’s big for the weight. This is going to be a massive test.”
Garcia is a more natural welterweight who has fought 28 times in all and won 25 with 20 knockouts, and he is predicting another come fight night. His sharp left hook has proven a problem for many and will be the thing Benn must stay most switched on to.
