The highly anticipated showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is edging closer.
Canelo will defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship against Crawford, who is making the jump up two weight classes from super-welterweight ahead of the ‘mega-fight’ in just two months.
Crawford has spent the majority of his professional career campaigning at welterweight before he moved up to face Israil Madrimov last August, dethroning the Uzbek star of his WBA title at 154lbs in Los Angeles.
One man who has a common association with both Canelo and Crawford is former unified world champion Amir Khan, who remains the only fighter to have shared the ring with the modern greats.
In an interview with Fastest Payout Online Casinos, Khan appeared to send a warning out to ‘Bud’ Crawford ahead of his showdown with the Mexican icon, as he claims he was ‘never the same’ after facing Canelo.
“It’s a very dangerous fight for Crawford, you’re only one punch away from getting hurt, Canelo’s power is always going to be there. Crawford has earned good money, he has a beautiful family, why risk it? You’re only one punch away from getting hurt, and he doesn’t really need the money or the fame. He’s pound for pound the best fighter in the world.
I was never the same fighter again facing Canelo. You can get knocked down, fine, you can get back up again, but the knockout Canelo gave me, it probably took five years off my life.
I was at the peak of my career and never came back as the same fighter again. I wasn’t gun shy or scared, but that one shot, it wasn’t good for the body or the mind. And it changed my opponent’s strategy for fighting me, they all started to try to land that one big shot.”
Whilst his bout against Canelo is viewed as the toughest test of his career, ‘Bud’ could write his name into boxing history should he be victorious as he will become the first male fighter ever to win an undisputed championship in three divisions.
