Amir Khan thinks he knows who will become the star of the heavyweight division in the coming years.
The big men always get the most attention in world boxing because of the ever-present threat of a dramatic one-punch knockout. Right now, there is plenty of change at the top.
Oleksandr Usyk holds three of the four major belts and is a two-time undisputed ruler, but he will soon retire, as will former champions and global sensations Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.
Speaking to Clubhouse Boxing, Khan was asked about who might be the next face of British boxing.
“British boxing, well, Moses Itauma is a fantastic fighter, wow. He could carry the heavyweight division. Everyone knows British boxing and the heavyweights. I think he is one of the heavyweights who is going to shine, definitely. Has knockout power, quite a slick fighter.”
It’s clear to see why Khan is so impressed, as Quensberry’s young star Itauma is only 21 years old but has already beaten all 13 of his opponents, 11 by KO and in increasingly dominant fashion, including the former world title challenger and notoriously tough competitor Dillian Whyte last time out.
He was due to fight this weekend, but an injury has put his contest with Jermaine Franklin back until March. Should he come through that, he will be looking to be involved with some huge fights, potentially against fellow heavyweight stars like former IBF king Daniel Dubois, who could also fly the flag for British boxing for some years to come.
